Big River Bakery is a social enterprise that seeks to create a system where quality local food is available and affordable to all.
After speaking with local schools we discovered that not all children are able to access free breakfast clubs - meaning kids are hungry and they can't learn - a vicious cycle. The schools do all they can to help but as budgets are continually stretched we looked at ways we could help.
From 31st October we started to deliver daily breakfasts during term time for these children to Christchurch school in Shieldfield. From 2023 - we hope to extend this to another local school.
Also - while we try nt to waste -any of our delicious freshly baked bread or products left at the end of the day we carefully wrap and donate to these schools for families in need - especially as many refugee / asylum seeker children attend these schools and have very little.
We also offer free baking activities to local school children too in the holidays and term time.
